The society already has some 80 customers and 1,400 ships signed up to its digital fleet performance programme which provides quality control of data and offers suggestions on possible improvements for both individual ships and fleets. Examples include adjustments to speed or trim, or improved use of auxiliary engines and boilers.
The new centres have been undergoing operational trials for the last nine months and are already supporting clients in Europe and Asia with data quality and performance alerts, reviews and ad-hoc investigations into performance issues and claims cases. Germany’s Leonhardt & Blumberg has been one of the classification society’s pilot customers.
"It is of great value to us when performance experts provide 'a second pair of eyes' on our fleet and give us real-time warnings if vessels are not being operated in the most efficient manner," said Christian Rychly, managing director of the shipping company.
Launch or the fleet performance centres is described by the classification society as "the first building block" of Eco Insight 2.0 which is due to be launched in August.
