The Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Global Service, formally Hyundai Heavy Industries, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the verification of new digital systems designed to support decarbonisation initiatives in shipping. The MoU was signed at Kormarine in Busan.

The move comes as more and more shipowners and operators are adopting smart digital systems to support their energy- and emissions-saving strategies.

The two organisations signed the MoU in response to these initiatives with a view to working closely together on the development of “shipping and maritime big data and artificial intelligence (AI) technology”, a convergence of digital and carbon-neutral technologies.

As a result of the agreement, Hyundai plans to develop a monitoring system for carbon emissions using AI technology, forecasting, and management systems, providing application programming interfaces (API) and data-related scenarios before and after applying carbon reduction initiatives.

KR will review the accuracy of ‘OceanWise’, a system developed by Hyundai to optimise the maritime supply chain with AI and big data technology, combining data from ships, ports, and weather monitoring systems.

KR chairman and CEO, Lee Hyungchul, noted: “In this challenging time with strengthened international decarbonisation regulations, it is essential for shipping companies to find efficient ways to reduce carbon emissions to secure competitiveness, and the convergence with digital technology will be the solution. We will fully support the industry to achieve more progress in eco-beneficial digital technology through the collaboration with HD Hyundai Global Service.”

Commenting for Hyundai, Lee Kidong, CEO, said: “We are glad to be able to officially prove the value of our solution with the cooperation of KR. Our carbon footprint monitoring system will meet the various industry demands regarding carbon emission management and will be a very useful tool for exploring new business opportunities.”
