Deutsche Bahn logistics subsidiary, DB Schenker, plans to launch a zero-emissions feeder service between Ikornnes and the Port of Ålesund on Norway’s west coast. Using a 50m-long vessel with a deadweight capacity of 300 tonnes, the 23-nautical-mile voyage will take the autonomous craft about three hours at a speed of 7.7 knots, partners in the project have revealed.

The German logistics firm has teamed up with Ekornes, a furniture manufacturer with a plant in Ikornnes, vessel design company Naval Dynamics, Kongsberg, and Massterly. The unmanned vessel will be supervised from a Massterly remote operations centre. DB Schenker’s CEO Norway, Knut Eriksmoen, declared: “This unique project will mark another important step towards greener supply chains and pays into our overall sustainability agenda in ocean freight. We are ambitiously taking the lead here with our cooperation partners.”

Roger Lunde, Ekornes CEO, highlighted the company’s aim of becoming a leading sustainable manufacturer of premium furniture. “Using the autonomous electric container feeder for direct pick-ups of our Stressless products from our own quay at Ikornnes means that our total carbon footprint will be reduced significantly.”
