Biofuel successfully tested on container ship

The 5,095-TEU container ship, CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt, has successfully completed a voyage between North Europe and Asia using a blend of heavy fuel oil-equivalent biofuel and conventional marine fuel.

The initiative, one stage in CMA CGM’s 2019 biofuel testing programme, was carried out in collaboration with IKEA Transport & Logistics Services with biofuel supplied by GoodFuels as part of the GoodShipping Program. The latest test follows an earlier biofuel trial on board the CMA CGM White Shark which took on biofuel supplied by GoodFuels in the Port of Rotterdam in March.

On both occasions, results of the fuel tests have demonstrated that the fuel blend incorporating biofuel provides a compatible and sustainable fuel, equivalent to heavy fuel oil but virtually free of sulphur and providing 80% to 90% CO2 reductions on a well-to-propeller basis compared with fossil-based equivalents.
