With a crane capacity of up to 2,500 tonnes and a 160m hook height above the deck, the J102 will enable contractors to carry and install four 15-MW turbines or eight 8-MW units in one go, the company said.
Edwin van Leeuwen, managing director of Ulstein Design & Solutions BV, commented: ‘The Ulstein X-JACK series is part of our strategy to complement our offshore wind design portfolio and strengthen our position as a long-term partner for supporting the offshore wind industry with sustainable and cost-efficient assets. Being innovative in our designs and focused on market needs, we achieved market leadership in offshore wind service vessels and heavy lift construction vessels. For wind turbine installation jack-ups, we like to become the industry’s preferred choice as well.’
The 145m-long jack-up has a deck area of 6,500m2 and its kite-shaped hull enables the legs to be spaced wide apart with large spud cans.

The Ulstein J102, part of the ship design company’s X-JACK series of heavy lift jack-ups, has been introduced to the market in response to what the company sees as ‘a need for fit-for-purpose, cost efficient yet future-proof wind turbine installation vessels’.
