Swedish state-owned multinational power company, Vattenfall, has awarded a “substantial” contract to Subsea 7 for the provision of supply and installation services at the Hollandse Kust Zuid 1-4 (HKZ 1-4) wind farm in the North Sea.

The contract is subject to a final investment decision by Vattenfall, and Subsea 7 will not add the contract to its order backlog until the green light has been given, the company said.

The contract involves the transport and installation of about 140 wind turbine foundations and 315km of 66 kV inner array cables at the site, which is located between 18km and 36km off the Dutch coast in water depths ranging from 18m to 27m.

The installation process, scheduled for 2021 and 2022, will use various specialised vessels operated by Seaway 7, the renewables and heavy lift transport subsidiary of Subsea 7, including cable lay, heavy lift and support ships.

The HKZ 1-4 wind farms being developed by Vattenfall are the first such facilities to be developed in the Netherlands without subsidies. When completed, the farms will have installed capacity of about 1.5 GW, sufficient to meet the electricity requirements of at least two million Dutch households.

The value of the Subsea 7 contract was not revealed but the company defines a substantial contract as having a value between USD 150 million and USD 300 million.
