Milan-based cable manufacturer, Prysmian Group, has ordered three cranes from Cargotec subsidiary, MacGregor, for installation on a sophisticated cable layer currently being built by Vard. The 191m-long vessel is costing around EUR 230 million and is due for delivery early in 2027.

The crane package consists of a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane, a 20-tonne offshore crane, and a two-tonne deck crane. The 191m-long DP3 vessel will have a bollard pull of more than 180 tonnes and will be capable of laying and burying up to four cables simultaneously, with a variety of ploughs.

Its three carousels will have a total cable capacity of 19,000 tonnes, placing the vessel in the highest group of ships in this specialised sector. MacGregor will also supply its OnWatch system, an online satellite-based condition monitoring system for solving crane issues at sea, rather than incurring downtime by deviating to port.

MacGregor’s Pasi Lehtonen, senior vice president, Offshore Solutions, noted that the company had been a reliable supplier of equipment to Vard over many years. “This is a significant order for MacGregor’s offshore handling business,” he said, “and we are pleased to supply Vard with yet another package of our high-performance cranes. The market continues to respond well to our unique and modern designs, which combine resilience in service and lightweight round-shaped jibs.”

The hull of the Vard 9 18 ship will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania. Outfitting and completion will then take place at one of the Fincantieri subsidiary’s yards in Norway.
