Penta Ocean Construction and DEME Offshore sign MoU

Japan aims to expand its offshore wind power industry (Source: DEME)

Japan’s Penta-Ocean Construction Co, Ltd., a marine contractor, and DEME Offshore of Belgium, an offshore marine engineering company, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together in the construction of offshore wind farms in Japan. The move comes as various initiatives have been taken recently to promote the development of the country’s offshore wind sector.

There are more challenges than usual in the Japanese setting. These include severe metocean conditions such as typhoons, earthquakes and complex subsoils.

However, the combination of DEME Offshore’s experience and technological know-how in Europe with Penta-Ocean’s expertise in Japan should provide a sound basis for tackling these challenges. "We believe that our collaboration will make a significant contribution to the futher expansion of Japan’s offshore wind industry through the realisation of safe and highly efficient construction methods,“ the companies said. Penta-Ocean owns Japan’s first offshore installation vessel, CP-8001, which has an 800-tonne crane and the company has a second vessel under construction, equipped with a 1,600-tonne crane. Meanwhile DEME Offshore has an unmatched turbine installation record, with more than 2,200 units now installed.
