Malaysia’s OMS Group has ordered two cable layers at Ulstein in Norway. The contract, signed late in December, is the latest step in the Asian company’s expansion strategy and comes at a time of surging demand for high-capacity subsea cable systems.
The two Ulstein SX252 ships, due for delivery in 2028, will have the latest installation capabilities and a strong focus on sustainability and reduced carbon emissions. The 130m-long vessels will have capacity to load up to 6,500 tonnes of cable in two large tanks, with an additional two spare tanks, and a hangar that encloses the cable deck.
Above the hangar, there will be a large open deck for remotely operated vehicles and containers. The cable layers will also have a 50-tonne A-frame with a towing winch for ploughing. The vessels’ will have Ulstein X-BOWs to reduce motions and wear on cables and cable equipment.
Datuk Lim Soon Foo, founder and chairman of OMS Group, said: “This latest expansion reflects OMS Group’s clear strategic direction, to invest and build a future-ready fleet that underpins the rapidly expanding global digital economy. Partnering with Ulstein and adopting the X-BOW® design reinforces our commitment to performance, sustainability, and operational excellence.”
Ulstein Group CEO, Gunvor Ulstein, commented: “We are proud to partner with OMS Group on these next-generation cable-laying vessels. This confirms Ulstein's position within the design and construction of special-purpose ships. By integrating our proven Ulstein® X-BOW® design with advanced technologies such as the Ulstein® Power Variable Speed Generator, we deliver vessels that set new standards for operational efficiency and environmental performance in this market.”
