Ørsted boosts offshore wind pipeline in Taiwan

Danish renewable energy company Ørsted, which changed its name from Dong Energy last year, has been awarded projects to provide 920 MW of offshore wind power in the Changhua region of Taiwan.

This successful auction win comes on top of the 900 MW of capacity awarded to the company in April, bringing the total to 1,820 MW.
Subject to obtaining relevant permits and taking the final investment decision, the projects are to be built in 2025 and Ørsted’s winning bid price was equivalent to about EUR 72.3 per MWh. The awards signal the company’s growing presence in the Greater Changhua area pf Taiwan.
Ørsted has been awarded exclusivity at four offshore wind sites located between 35km and 60km from shore which have a total potential capacity of 2.4 GW. Of this, 1.8 GW is likely to be developed in 2021 and 2025 while the remaining 600 MW will be the focus of future auction rounds. The four offshore wind farms could power approximately 2.8 million Taiwanese households in total and create thousands of jobs over their lifetime, the company said in a statement.
Globally, Ørsted has installed more than 1,200 offshore wind turbines with a capacity of about 5.1 GW and has a further 3.8 GW under construction. Now, it has won awards for another 1.8 GW of capacity in Taiwan and has the right to build 1.1 GW of capacity in Germany by 2025. The company is aiming to have a worldwide total of 11-12 GW of offshore wind capacity installed by 2025.
