Maersk Supply Service wins second decommissioning contract

Maersk Stingray subsea support vessel newbuilding

Maersk Supply Service was contracted by Maersk Oil UK earlier this year for decommissioning of the Janice subsea oilfield in the North Sea.
The Leadon field lies in a water depth of about 120m and the subsea structures to be recovered weigh up to 397 tonnes. Maersk Supply Service says it expects to have completed the project by December 2017.
According to the company, the Janice decommissioning project has progressed on time and as planned since commencement this summer. To date, Maersk Supply Service says it has safely removed and delivered the Janice floating production unit (FPU), recovered all subsea risers and sunk the mid-water arches on the seabed in preparation for a rig to begin the plug-and-abandonment phase of the project. The next phase will employ the company’s first of six Starfish state-of-the-art newbuildings that are built for deepwater anchor handling and oilfield operations.
Building on the synergies and collaboration established in the Janice decommissioning, Maersk Supply Service says the same team will begin work next autumn on the Leadon subsea field. Project planning for the Leadon decommissioning is already under way and up to five Maersk Supply Service vessels, including the Starfish newbuilding from Janice and one of the Stingray subsea support vessel newbuildings, are expected to be utilised in the project.

Denmark's Maersk Supply Service says it has been awarded a contract by Maersk Oil UK to provide decommissioning services beginning in autumn 2017 for the Leadon subsea oilfield in the North Sea, 120 nautical miles off the Shetland Islands. Both companies are part of the Copenhagen-headquartered A. P. Moller - Maersk Group.
