Liebherr lands record crane contract

Design layout of the new Liebherr HLC 295000 mounted on DEME’s offshore installation vessel Orion

Due for delivery in spring 2019, the crane with the designation HLC (heavy-lift crane) 295000 will have a lifting capacity of 3,000 tonnes at more than 50m, and a lifting height in excess of 170m.
The deal follows a strategic move taken by executives at the company’s offshore crane division last year in which they identified key opportunities in the expanding decommissioning and offshore wind markets. Both of these sectors are expected to produce high volumes of offshore work in the coming years, the company said.
Managing director of Liebherr Maritime Cranes Leopold Barthold commented: “The extension to our heavy crane range allows us to compete in a sector with only a few players that have had little competition of late, and we look forward to winning some of that market share.”
“The Liebherr Board and the Liebherr family were supporting this development during last year, so winning this order is proof we are heading in the right direction. It will be another important string to further promote diversification and provide access to new growth potential,” he added.
In addition to the main crane, the contract also includes two Liebherr RL-K 4200 knuckle boom cranes and an offshore crane simulator. The cranes will be built at the company’s maritime hub in Rostock on the Baltic Sea where assembly, installation/loadout and testing can all be carried out on site.

Rostock-based Liebherr Offshore Cranes has won a contract to supply the largest crane it has ever built for a new wind farm installation and platform decommissioning vessel, called Orion, ordered by DEME Group at Cosco (QiDong) Offshore, a Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry subsidiary.
