Kongsberg Maritime is to provide dynamic positioning and monitoring equipment for Equinor’s floating wind farm, Hywind Tampen, as part of a contract with Aberdeen-based Wood PLC.

The 88-MW wind farm will be the world’s largest floating farm and the first such facility to power offshore oil and gas platforms – in this case, the Snorre and Gullfaks offshore operations in the Norwegian North Sea.

Kongsberg will supply a Differential Position Sensor (DPS) system which uses global navigation satellite system infrastructure to provide continuous and reliable position information, including turbine location relative to the seabed.

The company will also provide a Motion Reference Unit (MRU) which will check roll, pitch, yaw and heave motions, providing essential data for the blade trimming system to guard against turbine overload and possible instability in heavy weather. The Kongsberg equipment will be used for remote access and monitoring.

Vidar Bjørkedal, Kongsberg Seatex AS’ vice president of Sales & Customer Support, commented: “Kongsberg Maritime’s offshore positioning portfolio leads the market, and it is a testament to the versatility of these existing technologies that they are being shown to be optimal for use in a range of diverse applications, including wind farms.”
