Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has completed the certification of the Provence Grand Large floating wind farm off the French Mediterranean coast west of Marseilles. The wind project development has been managed by Électricité de France (EDF) and its three 8-MW are expected to generate enough electricity for about 45,000 households.

Siemens Gamesa supplied wind turbines and towers. SBM Offshore and IFP Energies Nouvelles worked jointly on the floating foundations. Eiffage Métal oversaw the fabrication process. And Italy-based Prysmian supplied cables.

BV has been involved in the project since its inception in 2017 when initial documents were reviewed and approved. The manufacture of key components was then monitored and quality-controlled across various continents; transport and installation processes were overseen; and final assembly at the Fos-sur-Mer site was then approved. The classification society experts then witnessed the final commissioning tests, confirming that the facility was ready for operation.

BV’s Matthieu de Tugny, executive vice president, Industrials and Commodities at Bureau Veritas, congratulated the project team.

“We are delighted to have supported EDF power solutions, Enbridge and CPP Investments in bringing this project to fruition,” he declared. “Provence Grand Large demonstrates the immense potential of floating offshore wind technology and France’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.”
