UK-based Bibby Marine has ordered what is claimed to be the world’s first electric service operation vessel (eSOV) at Astilleros Gondán in Asturias, Spain. The zero-emission vessel is to have an advanced battery system and dual-fuel methanol engines.

The eSOV will have high-voltage offshore charging facilities and will be capable of operating on battery power alone for more than 16 hours between charges. The vessel will have state-of-the-art mission equipment, the shipbuilder said, as well as spacious insulated storage and climate-controlled electrical stores. Crew members will have spacious communal areas and well-appointed cabins designed for long spells at sea.

Astilleros Gondán is undergoing a period of significant expansion. The yard’s capacity has recently been boosted, and it is currently working on a six-vessel series of conventional SOVs for Edda Wind, a buoy tender vessel for Scotland’s Northern Lighthouse Board, an unmanned surface vessel for Norwegian interests, and ten fully electric ferries for clients in Portugal.

Referring to the Bibby order, the yard said in a statement: “This project underscores Gondán Shipbuilders’ dedication to innovation and our commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to a more sustainable future. Building this zero-emission vessel not only aligns with our expertise, but also with our vision for a cleaner, more sustainable maritime environment.”
