ABB has won a contract to supply electrical equipment and automation systems for two new Petrobras floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels to be built by Singapore-based Seatrium.

The P-84 and P-85 units will be stationed on the Atapu and Sépia fields, 200km offshore in the very deep waters of the Santos Basin. Each unit will have a production capacity of 225,000 barrels a day when they are commissioned later this decade.

ABB will design and supply electrical equipment for topsides and hulls, and electrical substation automation systems and eHouses for both units. The Brazilian state oil company will deploy that ABB AbilityTM System and IEC 61850 technologies for substation automation.

Meanwhile, for the first time, the two FPSOs will have an all-electric setup which focuses on efficient power generation and increased energy efficiency. This is made possible by using electrically driven compressors and motors to produce 165MW of power generation capacity.

In another first, ABB’s three Is-limiter configuration will be deployed offshore. This setup ensures that the high-power capacity of the FPSOs is managed effectively to prevent short circuits. The Is-limiters prevent damage to components by restricting the short-circuit current before it reaches its peak value.

ABB’s Energy Industries’ president, Per Erik Holsten, commented: “The offshore energy industry requires innovative solutions and technologies, at scale and at pace, to support an effective and secure energy market.  With our ability to meet advanced technical requirements and high safety standards, along with our deep commitment to energy efficiency, we look forward to working with Seatrium on this large-scale and complex project.”

The IEA estimates that by 2030, total global oil supply capacity will rise close to 114 million barrels a day.
