Contract to build a drilling ship placed with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry

In a huge boost for China’s plans to expand in the offshore oilfi eld sector, China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) has won a contract for one drilling ship from Norwegian owner Norshore.

The order includes three options for repeat vessels. The contracted vessel is a small-sized, multi-purpose drillship designed for riserless top-hole drilling and well intervention operations in the North Sea. “DSIC has an overall planning for the offshore business, the group itself is developing drillships and FPSOs, a subsidiary offshore company is dedicated to jack-up rigs and semi-submersible platforms and another subsidiary will be responsible for offshore repair and conversion, all of them together will improve the offshore percentage in the group’s business,” said Yu Fengping, general manager of DSIC. Drillships are among the most profi table of the shipbuilding contracts often commanding prices in excess of a half billion dollars each and have until now been the preserve of the big Korean shipbuilders.
