Norwegian ballast water treatment system (BWTS) maker, Optimarin AS, and Chinese BWTS manufacturer SunRui Marine Environment Engineering, are to collaborate in providing different treatment technologies suitable for various ship types and sizes.

Optimarin, which makes the first UV-based system to have been approved by the US Coast Guard, mostly targets small to medium-sized vessels. Meanwhile SunRui, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Company, uses electrolysis as a treatment technology in a system that is well-suited for medium and large vessels.

The two companies will cooperate by tailoring customised services for different owners and ship types, with the possibility of establishing a joint supply chain and after-sales service system in the future. Optimarin CEO Leiv Kallestad, said that the companies would be able to leverage each other’s unique strengths and consolidate market position in their target segments. “It’s a clear win-win,” he declared.
