Need a break from the exhibition halls? Hamburg offers plenty of opportunities to get moving, often with a view that makes the workout even more worthwhile.

The classic Hamburg running route is popular for a reason. The 7-kilometre loop around the Outer Alster Lake offers beautiful views, plenty of fellow runners and, best of all, no traffic lights to interrupt your flow. Drinking water stations are available along the route.

For a run with a maritime backdrop, head from the Landungsbrücken or Königstraße towards Teufelsbrück. The route takes you past the fish market, Elbe beach and several parks, with fantastic views of the port and passing ships. Feeling adventurous? Try running a stretch on the sand and take the ferry back from Teufelsbrück afterwards.

Short, intense and highly effective: the outdoor staircase at the Dockland office building offers 140 steps and a serious workout. The reward at the top is a spectacular panoramic view of the harbour.

For a more varied run, head to Planten un Blomen. Winding paths, hills, gardens and plenty of greenery make every kilometre different – perfect for stretching your legs before or after a busy day at SMM.
