DNV joins Smart Maritime Network

The classification society DNV has joined the Smart Maritime Network, an initiative to support and promote the safe sharing and standardisation of data in shipping’s rapidly expanding IT sector. The move comes as data usage and transfer continues to accelerate in maritime business, and companies and organisations offer an expanding range of new digital services to improve efficiency and raise standards.

Bjørn-Johan Vartdal, who heads the classification society’s Maritime Incubator, and Magnus Lande, in charge of the Asia-Pacific section of Veracity, DNV’s data platform for the shipping and energy sectors, will both join the Smart Maritime Council. This is a cross-industry membership group set up by the Smart Maritime Network to improve technology interoperability.

“Shipping is in the midst of a tectonic shift towards digitalisation,” declared Vartdal, “towards being able to access and utilise the massive amount of information the industry generates every day in digital format. However, to fully exploit this opportunity, we need the industry to work together. Having an active and focused forum for facilitating this industry cooperation is essential.”

Rob O’Dwyer, chief network officer of the Smart Maritime Network, welcomed DNV as members of the Council. “As a group focused on promoting standardisation and interoperability in maritime IT, our Council felt that expanded class society representation was important in building connections across the industry, given those societies’ experience working with both vessel operators and equipment providers on shipboard technology implementation,” he said.
