Damen takes control at Mangalia

The Mangalia shipyard in Romania

Previously known as Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries, the shipyard has been renamed Damen Shipyards Mangalia and will be operated by the shipyard group in a joint venture with the Romanian Government.
The yard is strategically important for Damen. Located on the Black Sea coast 45km south of Constanta, the facility has three drydocks with widths of 48m and 60m providing capacity for projects involving large vessels and offshore structures. With a total area of one million square metres, the yard is now the largest in the Damen Shipyards Group.
At a ceremony to mark the handover of shipyard operations, Damen’s chief financial officer Frank Eggink commented: “We will face a challenging period, considering the yard’s current condition. However, Damen aims to restore the financial health of the yard, stabilise employment and pursue fitting commercial opportunities internationally that will contribute to rebuilding activity levels.”
Damen already has a presence in Romania: it has owned and operated Damen Shipyards Galati since 1999.

Completed transaction The Damen Shipyards Group has taken operational control of Romania’s Mangalia shipyard following successful completion of a transaction with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering which has operated the facility since 1997.
