Costa Crociere buys into Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard
The agreement by the two Genoa-headquartered companies gives Costa Crociere a 33.3% share in the Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard, specialised in ship repair and conversion and controlled by San Giorgio del Porto. It calls for an initial investment of EUR 10 million aimed at increasing the efficiency of the shipyard with the best available technologies.
According to the partners, the investment will generate volumes and a scale that will allow "the entire shipping industry" to take advantage of the facilities for "any type of vessel" and maximise the potential of Dry Dock No. 10, which is able to accommodate big ships.
San Giorgio del Porto, part of the holding Genova Industrie Navali, is a leader in ship repair and conversion as well as ship dismantling/recycling and new construction projects. The Costa Group, which comprises the brands Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises and Costa Asia, is part of Miami-headquartered Carnival Corporation & plc.
For Costa, the investment represents what it says is a further step towards more advanced technical management of the group's fleet.
