Norwegian battery system producer, Corvus Energy, has opened a new test facility for hydrogen fuel cells in Bergen. The test area, which received Approval in Principle from DNV in March, is part of the Norwegian H2NOR project focusing on maritime-certified fuel cell development, in which Toyota is a partner.

Corvus Energy senior vice president Product Architect, Thor Humerfelt, commented: “Batteries and fuel cells are complementary products, and they need to work together in order to achieve optimal efficiency and extended lifetime.

“We will test multiple combinations of batteries and fuel cells for various operational profiles, and this is why the test site is so unique and important. In the end, we will have a system that will give recommendations for the vessel’s crew on the most optimal operation.”

The company plans to have the first marine hydrogen fuel cell system type-approved in 2023. It is then planning to start scalable production in time for commercial delivery in 2024.
