Hamburg-based SAL and Schiedam-headquartered Jumbo, both specialists in heavy-lift and project cargoes, have announced a new joint venture. The companies will combine large parts of their fleets, together with engineering and commercial activities, to provide more sustainable transport capacity and generate growth opportunities, the companies said.

The aim is to gain benefits from logistical efficiency through joint fleet operation, providing customers with increased vessel flexibility in both breakbulk and outsized cargo shipments.

The move comes against a backdrop of rising demand in the project cargo sector, involving the transport and installation of heavy offshore components in sectors including offshore wind, and oil and gas facility decommissioning. The new venture is subject to German and Dutch regulatory approvals which are now under way.
