DNV GL completes first remote in-water surveys with ROVs

The classification society has successfully completed three in-water remote surveys using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) on vessels managed by Bergen-based short-sea shipping company, Wilson ASA. The first such survey, monitored remotely by a surveyor in Høvik, was completed last December on the hull of the 2012-built general cargo ship, Wilson Fedje.
Two more Wilson-owned vessels have undergone remote in-water hull surveys since then, with the most recent inspection completed in Bergen and monitored remotely by a surveyor from DNV GL’s Direct Access to Experts (DATE) hub in Piraeus. The three surveys were undertaken together with Vuvi AS, a Norwegian inspection company certified by DNV GL to carry out underwater surveys on ships and offshore assets.
Commenting on the latest development in ship survey technology, DNV GL’s CEO – Maritime, Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen said: “We are delighted to have collaborated with Vuvi and Wilson ASA to deliver this exciting new approach to remote surveys. DNV GL has been carrying out remote surveys since 2018, so this service is an extension of a broad suite of remote services that are already available.”
The in-water surveys were completed in about two-and-a-half hours, about the same time as a conventional hull inspection, DNV GL said. Secure data storage and transfer between Vuvi, Wilson ASA and the classification society was undertaken via DNV GL’s digital platform, Veracity.
