ABB scores major hit with Great Eastern deal

India’s Great Eastern Shipping Company is to install ABB’s AbilityTM Tekomar XPERT engine performance and diagnostic software across its fleet of bulk carriers and tankers. Following successful trials on two vessels, India’s largest private shipowner will install the software on 46 ships.

The system will provide instant diagnostics and optimisation recommendations, replacing the company’s earlier manual monitoring and monthly analysis process. This will assist the performance management department, which uses the engine data from vessels to comply with the EU’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification requirements, as well as the IMO’s Data Collection System for carbon emissions.

One of the key benefits of the system is the speed with which engine problems can be identified and diagnosed, explained Anjan Kumar Sahu, the shipping company’s Head of Technical. “Our fleet has been growing and we wanted monitoring software that could help to analyse engine performance and guide us to better-running engines. After several meetings with ABB, we installed Tekomar XPERT on two vessels. The feedback from our superintendents was that the software identified engine issues and potential future issues.”

The ABB system can be deployed on any engine, regardless of age or type, and runs on the company’s ABB Ability platform with its robust cyber security safeguards.
