In a major move to significantly improve its shipbuilding and ship repair production capacity, China’s Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) shipyard has started the construction of a new 300,000dwt capacity drydock. The new graving dock will measure 430m x 120m, with a depth of 12.5m.

Construction of the new drydock is expected to be completed towards the end of 2026, with the facility being used to build large container ships, as well as drydock the world’s largest container ships. There is a dearth of large drydocks capable of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels.

At the same time, the shipyard will upgrade its No.7 drydock to further improve its ship repair capacity. With the new drydock operational, the yard will be able to build eight large vessels simultaneously, as well as repair 350 vessels annually.

Located in China’s main ship repair area of Zhoushan, the new ship repair expansion project will generate new business growth for the yard, supporting its business transformation into new energy, high technology, high efficiency and high value-added markets, said Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan).

Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry currently operates nine shipyards in China, with an annual shipbuilding capacity of over 7.5 million tonnes and a ship repair capacity of over 1,500 vessels per year.
