One Network Express Pte Ltd. (ONE) has signed contracts with Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for each shipbuilder to construct six 13,000-TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships.

The contracts represent ONE’s inaugural order for vessels with this fuel arrangement and forms part of the company’s Green Strategy. This initiative has the ambitious target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, including Scope 2 and 3, by 2050.

Methanol is expected to provide significant potential for emission reductions. However, upon entering service in 2027, the vessels will also incorporate a range of other sustainability technologies, including optimised hull forms, waste heat recovery systems, bow wind shields, air lubrication installations, and shaft generators.

Jeremy Nixon, chief executive of ONE, said: “Our decision to invest in methanol dual-fuel vessels aligns with ONE’s Green Strategy as part of our key initiatives. The upcoming new fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative fuel ships by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry.”

ONE was established in July 2017 as a combination of the liner services of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Nippon Yusen Kaisha. A member of THE Alliance, a global ocean carrier consortium, ONE operates more than 230 vessels on over 170 services to 120 countries and beyond. It is the sixth-largest container carrier, with a fleet capacity of 1.8 million TEU.
