Paris-based Nexans, a global energy transition and electrification specialist, has chosen a hybrid power system from ABB for a new cable layer on order at Ulstein Verft in Norway. Due for delivery in 2026, the vessel will join sister ship, Nexans Aurora, and Nexans Skagerrak, as the company’s third cable layer.

ABB’s scope of supply includes generator, switchboards, transformers, frequency converters, motors, DC switchboard for batteries, and energy storage system (ESS). The company will also supply a Remote Diagnostic System (RDS) for propulsion, thruster inverters, rectifiers, and cyber security systems.

The RDS will enable precise and timely fault detection, improving system performance, and minimising the need for on-site service. A closed-ring configuration will provide high fault tolerance and optimise energy use in dynamic positioning mode, minimising the risk of power loss and boosting operational flexibility and fuel efficiency.

Meanwhile, the ESS will reduce engine running hours and provide spinning reserve and peak-shaving capabilities. It will also contribute to the vessel’s power requirements in more energy-intensive operations or as a back-up source of power.

Rune Braastad, ABB’s global business line manager, Marine Systems, commented: “Following the success of the Nexans Aurora, ABB is proud to be involved in this project to deliver the new sister ship. Nexans appreciates the benefits that our closed-ring system, ESS, and RDS provide to support safe, efficient, and reliable cable-laying operations. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with both Nexans and Ulstein Verft.”
