Hanwha Ocean and BV unveil large LNG design

South Korean shipbuilder, Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) and classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) have released details of a new 270,000m3 LNG carrier design.

The move is the latest in a series of design initiatives to increase the size of LNG carriers from the ‘standard’ 174,000m3 vessels that are popular today.

Hanwha Ocean has prepared the development of Hull Key Drawings for the new design in compliance with BV’s requirements and relevant regulations. Subsequently, the partners agreed to develop this new vessel to secure structural reliability and obtain an Approval in Principle, according to a statement from the classification society.

BV undertook 2D local scantling and 3D cargo hold finite element analysis, assessing the longitudinal strength of the hull, as well as the yielding and buckling of longitudinal and transverse members. Fatigue analysis was also conducted using a local fine mesh to evaluate the details of hull structures sensitive to fatigue.

Hanwha Ocean’s Sang-Don Kang, vice president of the Basic Design Department, said: “The newly developed LNG carrier is dedicated to minimising unit freight costs and ensuring structural robustness for the vessel’s safety performance. I am pleased that the structural reliability of this new vessel will be verified once again through this Joint Development Project with BV.

Speaking for Bureau Veritas Korea, country chief executive Capt. Drago Pinteric, commented: “The development of a new standard 270K LNG carrier holds immense importance for BV as it aligns with our core responsibilities of ensuring safety, compliance, and quality in maritime operations. This involvement reinforces BV's commitment to industry leadership, innovation, and the promotion of sustainable and safe shipping practices.”
