Netherlands-based heavy construction specialist, Huisman, has been awarded a contract to upgrade the offshore mast crane on board the Aegir, a ten-year-old deepwater construction vessel owned and operated by Heerema Marine Contractors.

The project will involve increasing the capacity of the second main hoist crane from 2,000 tonnes to 3,200 tonnes at a height of 110m. This will enhance the ship’s capability in handling the installation of large jacket foundations, the company said.

The upgraded crane for one of the world’s largest monohull heavy-lift vessels will feature a fixed jib section and a robust 3,200mt lower block and hook. The extra lifting additional capacity will broaden Heerema’s ability to undertake major offshore projects as components continue to increase in size.

The Aegir has had a lifting capacity upgrade before. In 2020, its primary 4,000-tonne Offshore Mast Crane was increased to provide a lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes.

Huisman CEO, David Roodenburg, commented: “We are honoured to once again collaborate with Heerema on this milestone upgrade for the Aegir vessel. This project reaffirms our commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions to our clients, making their operations more efficient, and strengthening them in their current and future business.”
