Wind propulsion retrofit completed on bulk carrier Launkalne

BLRT Repair Yards Tallinn has completed the installation of two VentoFoil wind-assisted propulsion units on board the bulk carrier Launkalne, managed by Grona Shipping BV. The retrofit marks a significant step in enhancing operational efficiency and reducing emissions from bulk carriers through innovative wind propulsion technology.

Launkalne, designed to carry up to 8,100 tonnes of wood pellets, is now equipped with Econowind’s VentoFoil sails, which use airflow to generate additional thrust and reduce engine load. According to the manufacturer, depending on vessel size and operational profile, the VentoFoil system can reduce fuel consumption by 10 to 30%, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved compliance with evolving IMO decarbonisation targets.

In addition to the sail installation, the vessel underwent a full maintenance and overhaul programme during its stay at the yard. The combined work ensures Launkalne is both operationally and environmentally optimised for future voyages.

BLRT Repair Yards has expressed its continued commitment to supporting shipowners in integrating technologies that offer clear environmental and economic benefits. As more vessels look to meet stricter efficiency and emission standards, retrofits like this one highlight the growing role of wind propulsion in the maritime energy transition.
