China’s SunRui joins the party with new rotor sail

Chinese shipyards have accrued experience fitting rotor sails for companies such as Norsepower (shown)

After fitting a large number of rotor sails from other manufacturers, China now has its own, developed by SunRui Marine Environment Engineering, veteran of the ballast water management and onboard carbon capture (OCCS) market. The new Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS-RSS) rotor sail has become the first of its kind in China to receive Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas.
The rotor sail features a composite structure and intelligent control system, has been verified for delivering significant fuel savings and carbon emission reductions. Suitable for both retrofits and newbuilds, the WAPS-RSS marks a major step forward in China’s green shipping capabilities.
The achievement builds on SunRui’s established track record in marine environmental systems, notably the widely adopted BalChlor ballast water management system, which has set industry standards for compliance and performance.
As well as having retrofit capacity, the addition of a Chinese rotor sail will make it more likely that newbuild vessels such as car carriers and tankers are delivered from China’s shipyards with sails already equipped, resulting in a better-performing fleet.
