Trade associations to cooperate more closely

The three associations, between them, account for more than 90% of the world’s fleet.
ICS chairman, Esben Poulsson, declared that shipping is a global industry requiring global rules. “It is only natural that as the representatives of the world’s national shipowner associations, we should further cement our relationships to ensure that we work as effectively as possible in support of a global regulatory framework for shipping and in opposition to unwelcome regional or unilateral initiatives that may impede the efficiency of maritime trade.”
The agreement, which was signed in Singapore, reflects the increasing importance of Asian shipowners and the demand for shipping services that is generated within that continent. Meanwhile, it was noted that European Union maritime legislation, in some cases introduced unilaterally, is of great significance to shipowners everywhere and therefore the combination of the three associations should help to represent the interests of all owners and operators more effectively.
