DNV GL introduces remote ship surveys

The Maritime Operational Centre in Høvik, Norway, from where remote surveys are being carried out. Other units with remote survey experts are located in Hamburg, Singapore, Houston and Piraeus.

This will greatly reduce the need for surveyors to visit ships physically, instead enabling a dedicated team of remote surveyors to support vessels anywhere in the world with documentation, images, streamed or recorded video and other input from shipboard personnel.
Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, the classification society’s CEO, said: “Remote surveys allow us to free up more time for our customers, while delivering our services with unparalleled response time. In addition, cutting down on unnecessary travel can result in lower costs, less waiting, and more operational uptime. We’ve had a great response from our customers and support from major flag states.”
Technology testing began in 2017, the first production pilot tests were undertaken in June 2018, and more than a thousand surveys were completed in the pre-launch test and trial process. Any vessel classed by DNV GL can now use the new service but periodic surveys such as annual, intermediate or special surveys still require the physical attendance of a surveyor.

Owners and operators of DNV GL-classed vessels will now be able to use the classification society’s new remote survey and inspection system, made possible by its Veracity data platform.
