First steel cut for Germany’s largest-ever cruise ship

The simultaneous start of construction of the first 204,000gt Global-class cruise ship for Genting Hong Kong has begun at two MV Werften shipyards in Germany.

Just a few minutes separated the cutting of the first steel at the company’s yards in Wismar and Rostock where the largest cruise ship ever to be constructed in Germany will be built. Final assembly of the vessel will take place at the Wismar facility before its scheduled delivery at the end of 2020.
Chairman and CEO of Genting Hong Kong, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, launched the flame cutter to start construction in the Wismar yard. He said: “After designing the Global-class ships for the last three years and investing over EUR 210 million to make MV Werften the state-of-the-art cruise shipbuilding yard in the last two years, we are very pleased to finally start construction on the first Global cruise ship today.
“These ships are not only the largest cruise ships to be built in Germany; they are also the most technologically advanced with artificial intelligence. The Global-class ships will follow the embrace of Asians of artificial intelligence in their daily lives, with facial and voice recognition for most services on board and robots to perform mundane tasks, allowing the crew to focus on service delivery.”
The Global-class ships have been designed specifically for the Asian market and will have flexible cabins with two bathrooms and space for two, three or four persons. The 342m-long vessels have a nominal capacity of 5,000 passengers in 2,500 cabins but the ships will have a total life-saving capacity of 9,500 persons enabling them to cater for high peak holiday demand in Asia.
The ships will be equipped with features likely to appeal to Asian customers. These will include a Cineplex, theme park, Asian spa, authentic multiple Asian dining outlets including fast-food alternatives, and both affordable and luxury shopping facilities. In addition to the 28 large elevators, the Global-class ships will be the first to have escalators, with eight sets connecting public areas. Facial recognition will help to minimise queuing, disembarkation and payment procedures while contextual marketing will even out demand for ship facilities, it is claimed.  
On the same day that the Global-class steel cutting took place, the Crystal Debussy, third of four high-end Rhine-class ships, was handed over to Crystal River Cruises. Representatives from the State Government, the Hanseatic city of Wismar, Genting Hong Kong and Crystal Cruises attended the celebratory handover which took place in the Wismar shipyard’s dock hall ahead of schedule.
MV Werften has significant work in hand. The last Rhine-class vessel, the Crystal Ravel, is due for delivery in April. Construction of the first of three expedition mega yachts began at the company’s Stralsund shipyard in January, with the first delivery due in December. And construction of the second Global-class ship will start early in 2019 for delivery late in 2021.
