Swiss-based WinGD has unveiled details of a new dual-fuel LNG engine, the X-DF-HP, its first high-pressure unit developed specifically for the high-power requirements of the ultra-large container ship (ULCS) sector. The first engines, scheduled to be available in 2028, will enable owners to raise efficiency, cut emissions, and meet all existing fuel regulations until at least 2035.

They have been designed to meet specific challenges faced by operators of ULCS. These include high power requirements, exceptional efficiency, and robust reliability. The X-DF-HP will also provide a platform for the upgrade of existing engines such as the X92-B series, with retrofits to high-pressure LNG, methanol, ethanol, or ammonia.

The engines, available in X82 and X92 bore sizes, will have the same auxiliary system requirements as other engine installations and will be straightforward for yards to install. They will also enable IMO Tier III compliance in both gas and diesel modes with selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

WinGD vice president R&D, Sebastian Hensel, said: “The X-DF-HP is built on the high-pressure Diesel X92-B engine platform that has already proven itself as one of the most efficient and reliable large-bore solutions in the container segment,. Building on our longstanding diesel engine expertise and our deep experience in LNG dual-fuel technology, we’ve developed the X‑DF‑HP. Our tests and simulations show the X-DF-HP will deliver a clear step up in fuel efficiency and GHG performance compared to existing high-pressure dual-fuel engines on the market.”
