Wärtsilä has won a contract to design a krill trawler for Shanghai Chonghe Marine Industry. The 140m-long vessel will be the largest ship of this type built so far and will be capable of fishing in Antarctic waters for long periods of time. Onboard processing equipment will ensure that the vessel can supply krill products of high quality. It is the second trawler of this type that Wärtsilä has designed for the Chinese company and is considerably larger than the 115m-long Shen Lan, which is nearing completion and for which Wärtsilä is also supplying engines.

The latest design will enable the Chinese company to reach its catch quota more efficiently, with a lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The design is due to be completed during the second quarter of this year and the trawler is expected to be delivered in 2023.

Laurent Wang, CEO of the Chinese fishing company, commented: “We are excited to announce our plans for the world’s biggest and most advanced krill trawler. Wärtsilä was a natural choice for us, following the excellent collaboration in designing the Shen Lan. Wärtsilä has proven to be a capable and reliable partner for us, and we are happy to strengthen our cooperation with them.”
