Wärtsilä LPG fuel supply systems for four more ships

Following successful full-scale tests of Wärtsilä’s LPG fuel supply system (LFSS) with a two-stroke engine burning liquid petroleum gas, the company has won an order to supply LFSS for four very large gas carriers, owned by Oslo-listed BW LPG, which are to be retrofitted for LPG propulsion.

The deal follows an earlier contract between BW LPG and MAN Energy Solutions in which four gas carriers had MAN B&W ME-LGIP engines installed, burning LPG and replacing their original heavy fuel oil engines. A total of eight BW LPG vessels will now benefit from LPG engine retrofits.

Wärtsilä will provide system integration for the new engine installations. This will involve certain ship design modifications, installation of the LFSS and integration of the LFSS control systems into the ships’ integrated automation systems. The company will also act as project coordinator between shipyard, engine manufacturer and owner. Retrofitting of the first vessel will take place in April.
