Wärtsilä 31DF engines for Ponant expedition cruise ship

French cruise operator Ponant has chosen Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines for a polar ice-class expedition cruise ship currently under construction at Vard Søviknes in Norway.

The 150m-long vessel will operate primarily on LNG during voyages in environmentally sensitive regions including the waters of the Arctic and Antarctic.
The Ponant vessel will have four Wärtsilä 31DF 14-cylinder engines and two 10-cylinder units. It will also have a fuel gas supply system from the company and Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum advanced navigation equipment which can be integrated later with an Eniram proactive energy management system. Wärtsilä acquired Eniram, a performance monitoring company, in 2016.
Charles Gravatte, Ponant general secretary, commented: “We have ordered the building of a clean ship featuring technologies that go beyond current industry-standard environmental regulations. This is why we have chosen a propulsion format with Wärtsilä’s highly efficient 31DF engine running on LNG.”
The Wärtsilä equipment will be supplied in 2020, one year before the cruise vessel is delivered.
