Fincantieri-owned Vard has won a contract from Russian fishing company, Luntos Co. Ltd, for the design and construction of a second stern trawler incorporating a range of technologies to maximise productivity and optimise environmental performance. The 87m-long vessel, to be built at the Vard Vung Tau shipyard in Vietnam, is due for delivery in the third quarter of 2022.

Vard has worked closely with its fishing client in tailoring the design. Features of the trawler, which will operate in deep waters off Eastern Russia, include systems to ensure good vessel performance in demanding conditions, and a hull designed for optimal performance in both trawling and transit modes. Attention has also focused on comfortable living quarters for crew members.

The trawler’s fish processing systems for palletising, refrigerating and freezing fish will operate 24 hours a day to ensure premium quality while offal will provide feedstock for a fish meal plant. Attention has also focused on ensuring that the trawler’s catch can be delivered to shore with the smallest possible environmental footprint.

Luntos operates from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatky in the Eastern Russia Economic Fishing Zone and the Western Bering Sea.
