Thun Tankers orders four next generation chemical tankers

The newbuildings will feature sustainability, new regulations, and environmental care

Shipping company Thun Tankers said it has placed an order with Dutch yard Scheepswerf Ferus Smit for four 7,999dwt coastal tankers with dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

They will be delivered starting in the fourth quarter of 2018. They will have 9,500 cu.m of capacity and will have ice class 1A. The vessels will also have cargo heating. The IMO type II tankers will measure 115m of length, 15.8m of beam and have a draught of 6.9m. Tank coating will be chemical and vegetable oil resistant. They will have dual-fuel main engine with LNG as optional fuel and a fuel-efficient hull design with eco bow design. They will also have ballast water treatment and will be fitted for receiving land electricity for power when in port. The propeller will be fitted with a nozzle ring for better fuel efficiency. The vessels will have reduced noise levels both under and above water. They will be built to a similar size as the sixteen tankers that Thun Tankers currently operates. The intention is to gradually replace some of the existing tankers with the newbuildings now ordered. The yard has previously built more than thirty vessels for the Erik Thun group. The intention is to offer sister ships where the use of LNG as a fuel is a possibility, depending on clients’ request.
