Synthetic lubricant boosts gearbox efficiency

Tests undertaken recently by ExxonMobil’s Equipment Builder team and German gearbox manufacturer Reintjes have shown that the lubricant company’s Mobil SHCTM 626 synthetic gear oil can reduce energy losses and generate annual savings per gearbox of up to EUR 1,400.

ExxonMobil worked with its distribution partner Den Hartog to undertake the tests which were carried out using power and torque monitoring devices and a selection of representative oils.
The results indicated that Mobil SHC 626 gear oil helped to improve gearbox thermal and mechanical efficiency by 0.27% compared with Mobil DelvacTM 1330 engine oil. For a fully mechanically optimised gearbox, this equates to a significant reduction in total energy losses of 10% and an approximate saving of EUR 1,400 a year. Further potential savings could arise from extended component and oil life, plus longer maintenance intervals, the companies said.
