The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has ordered two plus two autonomous electric ferries at Holland Shipyards Group. The first vessel is due for delivery in the second half of 2024.

The 86m-long ferries, with capacity for 60 cars, will operate according to the IMO’s autonomy level 2. They will be managed remotely from a control centre in Stockholm but will have seafarers on board who can take control if necessary.

The contract includes four ferries, eight auto-mooring facilities, and four shoreside charging stations enabling the vessels’ systems to recharge in about four minutes.

Reducing the dependency on shipboard crew requires significant system redundancy so that if one operation fails, other systems are available. The ships’ Integrated Automations Systems will be complex, therefore, and mirrored in the remote control centre ashore, providing monitoring personnel with full access to the ferries’ operating systems.

The shipyard group claims to be a frontrunner in vessel electrification with many electric and hybrid ferries delivered in north-west Europe over the last five years.
