Gothenburg-based Stena RoRo has taken delivery of its 13th E-Flexer RoPax ferry from China Merchants’ Weihai shipyard. Named Capu Rossu, the vessel has been handed over to Corsica Linea following its delivery to the Swedish company. It will be deployed from mid-June on the route between Marseille and Corsica.
The 203m-long vessel is likely to operate mostly on LNG. It has capacity for 1,000 passengers and 2,500 lane-metres of freight.
A total of 15 E-Flexers are being built for Stena RoRo at the Chinese yard. Although based on a standard design which is larger than most typical RoPax ferries, each vessel is tailored to meet the requirements of operators. In this case, the ship has an optimised hull form, engines that can run on a range of fuels, and batteries.
Per Westling, Stena RoRo CEO, said: “Due to today's fast development of the hull form design and propulsion optimisation in combination with the battery power systems we now start to install on our ships, it is clear that ordering of new ships will be the most important and strongest tool to reduce the CO2 emissions of the ferry industry.
“The cooperation between the CMI Weihai shipyard and Stena RoRo has been instrumental for the successful deliveries of ships and it has made it possible for us to deliver tailormade ships both to our own ferry operator, Stena Line, but also to several external ferry companies with the highest quality and in time,” he added.
