Steel cutting ceremony for first vessel in Arctic LNG 2 series

A steel cutting ceremony has been held at Russia’s Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in Primorsky to mark the start of construction of 15 icebreaking LNG carriers for Sovcomflot that will serve the Arctic LNG 2 project.

The first of the 172,000m3 Arc7 ice-class vessels, incorporating design changes enabling year-round navigation in the eastern sector of the Russian Arctic, is due for delivery in the first quarter of 2023. The new vessels, with more manoeuvrability and higher speeds than the icebreaking LNG carriers built so far, are seen as an important strategic step as Russia seeks to boost cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route.

The first vessel in the new series was ordered directly by Sovcomflot; the others were contracted by Smart LNG, a joint venture between Sovcomflot and Novatek, Russia’s second largest gas producer.

“The steel cutting is an important milestone, signifying not only progress with the construction of the first vessel but the whole series,” Yury Borisov, Deputy Prime Minster of the Russian Federation, told those attending the ceremony. “These vessels will significantly contribute to the development of cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route, which is strategically important for Russia.”
