Oslo-based Yara Clean Ammonia has staged a steel-cutting ceremony for the world’s first renewable ammonia-powered container ship, Yara Eyde. The company, the world’s largest shipper and trader of ammonia, plans to deploy the ship on the Oslo-Porsgrunn-Bremerhaven-Rotterdam route.
The 1,400-TEU ice-class ship is under construction at China’s Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding. The vessel will be owned by Delphis, a subsidiary of CMB-Tech and will be operated by a joint venture between Yara Clean Ammonia and North Sea Container Line, NCL Oslofjord. Yara will supply ammonia for the vessel.
Hans Olav Raen, Yara Clean Ammonia, said: “This is more than the start of a ship – it is the start of a new chapter in maritime decarbonisation. Yara Eyde embodies our ambition to make low-emission ammonia a reality for shipping and to inspire the industry toward solutions that reduce emissions.”
