Netherlands-based Spliethoff has ordered eight, option two, 26,800dwt multi-purpose vessels at Wuhu Shipyard Co Ltd in China. The L-type vessels, suitable for bulk consignments, project cargoes, and containers, will be built to Finnish/Swedish Ice Class 1A and will have a length of just about 203m, a breadth around 28m and a cubic capacity of about 33,700m3.

The ships will be the largest in the Spliethoff fleet and are designed with fine hull lines and ‘prepared’ for the use of future fuels, the company said. With a bridge located forward, the vessels will each have five side loaders and three cranes of 150 tonnes lifting capacity. When combined, the cranes will have a maximum safe working load of 300 tonnes. The large main decks are free from obstruction and suitable for large cargo consignments.

The company’s chief commercial officer, Michael van den Heuvel, commented: “We are convinced that we will have secured the excellent service to our clients for the future and look forward to welcoming these energy-efficient vessels into our fleet. We are proud of this step forward and believe that the L-type will play an important role in the sustainable future of our company.”

Delivery of the vessels is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2028.
