Astilleros Gondán has won a contract for two commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), billed as the first “zero emission” ships of their type, from Norwegian shipowner, Østenjsø Rederi AS. The vessels are to be built to a design developed by Norway’s Salt Ship Design and are intended for operation in the offshore wind sector.

The 88.3m-long CSOVs will have a series of innovative features including Siemens’ BlueDrive PlusC Star diesel-electric propulsion systems, eVSP propellers in which permanent magnet electric motors are integrated into Voith Schneider propellers, and technology that will enable zero-emission operation in the future fuelled by hydrogen.

The CSOVs, with accommodation for 120 persons, will also have an electrically powered crew transfer system with any surplus energy transferred to the ships’ battery packs, heat recovery systems, stabilisation systems in both static and dynamic modes, and motion-compensated cranes with a capacity of five tonnes at 24m outreach.
