Belgian barge owner, Somtrans, has named its first LNG bunker barge, United LNG I. The vessel is the result of close cooperation between the barge company, shipbuilding contractor RensenDriessen, and outfitting partners TeamCo Shipyard and Gas & Heat.
The 135m-long Estuary-class barge, with a hull built in China, has been fitted with eight cryogenic Type-C cargo tanks of 1,000m3 each capable of storing LNG at -165ºC. The vessel is designed for operation on coastal services up to Zeebrugge as well as inland waterway operation in Europe.
The United LNG I is the first of two LNG bunker barges, the second of which will arrive for outfitting in March 2026. The strategic move by Somtrans is in response to growing demand for LNG bunkers in northwest Europe. This, in turn, is driven by the expansion in dual-fuel vessels operating in sectors including containers, tankers, bulk, RoRo, and cruise.
Somtrans CEO, Caroline Somers, said: “For vessels and technologies that anticipate the next chapter of sustainable shipping, LNG bunkering is a deliberate step in that direction. We choose solutions that matter over the long term, focusing on cleaner fuels and the vessels that support them. This project strengthens our role in the maritime energy transition.”
